Happy Birthday Andy!

I’m afraid that since Mo’s birthday will forever be the day after Andy’s birthday, we’ll make a bad habit of glossing over his special day.

So, my love, here’s a blog post all for you, complete with your very own birthday song.

Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday dear Andy!
Happy Birthday to you!

I can count on you to always do the right thing. Not the easy thing, the right thing. Always. That trait, more than anything else, makes you the best father and husband a woman could want.

Here’s to a fantastic 29th year! Thanks for sharing your birthday weekend with my favorite (almost) three year old.

Me

P.S. Your dad pointed out that this year you and Mo are celebrating prime birthdays (3 and 29), I knew you’d like that…

Father’s Day, a Little Belated….

Cause that’s how we roll ’round here.

DSC_9227I set these shots up for a photo class I’m taking from AshleyAnn Photography. It was a great reason to make all our “Dad”s cards.

My girls are blessed to have one dad, two grandpas, and three great-grandpas.

DSC_9233Each of these fantastic men is a shining example of what a man can and should be.

DSC_9249They all love my girls, and my girls love them back!

DSC_9256In a world where sometimes it seems that good men are in short supply, we are ridiculously blessed and beyond grateful.

DSC_9277So, Daddy, Papa Bob, Papa Paul, Great Grandpa Wes, Great Grandpa Bob, and Great Grandpa Paul, we love you very much! And give thanks for you every day!

And sometimes that thanks is expressed in beautifully doodled cards…

Again…

It happened.

Again.

The whole stepping-on-the-dead-mouse-head thing…

This one’s a little desiccated, and is infront of the washing machine. I did appreciate the non-juiciness this time round.

Andy’s on his way home from work, and I’m going to leave the dismembered parts right where they are.

He’ll walk in the door, I’ll give him a hug and a kiss, then send him straight to the garage.

While I go bleach my feet.

Again.

Definitely losing my mind. That’s for certain.

Anniversary Weekend Part 1

Falls-6On Saturday and Sunday I took a waterfall photography course from Randal Hodges. Go ahead. Take a second and click on that link to his website. It’s well worth your time. His photography is spectacular. Just come on back when you’re done drooling and dreaming of beautiful wall calendars.

He knows all the right spots, and all the right camera settings, to get all the right photos. Not to mention, he’s an excellent teacher. Be you novice or professional, I certainly recommend his courses to anyone who wants to learn more about photography!Falls-2

Randal teaches, I think, a fairly unconventional way to use DSLRs. He does practically no post-processing color adjustments, favoring, instead, to set up “rolls of film” in the color profiles of the actual cameras. Analogous to using Fuji versus Kodak film in the old SLRs. So, the pictures below are SOOC (straight out of the camera). There’s been no editing except to shrink the giant files size to something more manageable.

Falls-3If you took the time to look at his work, you’ll understand why all my waterfalls are very soft. That’s his style. We didn’t try to ramp up our shutter speed and catch individual water droplets. We were very deliberate about setting up tripods, attaching our cable release (kind of a remote shutter button), and waiting through very long exposures. While taking photos off of bridges, we weren’t allowed to move during exposures, for fear of jostling everyone’s sensors. There’s photography etiquette. Who knew?

Falls-4The first day was spent hiking to several waterfalls along the Historic Columbia River Highway: Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Horsetail Falls and Ponytail Falls. At each stop he educated us a little more about our cameras, gave us individual feedback and helped us set up a stellar shot.

The second day was a hike into Wachella Falls, where we spent the whole day shooting the falls and the surrounding area. We also perfected the use of a polarizer. See, I can take pictures through the water now!

Falls-5I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but it was too sunny. What?! I know. I know. That sounds crazy coming from me. I’m surely a sun-worshiping pagan deep down (or not that deep down if you know me well). However, for this ONE weekend, cloud cover would have been best. We raced the retreating fog and waited at each location, praying for an errant cloud to meander by. But, the Sun god was smiling on me that day. So we worked with the conditions available, and tucked valuable bits of knowledge away for the next cloudy day.

However, the warm sun really came in handy for the hike Andy and I did Saturday evening, but that’s for Part 2 of this post. What do parents of small children do when they have a whole 36 hours away? Stay tuned for next time!

Babies in Mass

We went to a Good Friday service at the little church next door to my Grandparent’s house in Benton City, WA (fun facts: my great grandpa donated the land for the church, it’s the church my grandparents were married in, my parents were married in, and where Mo was baptized!).Mo's baptism

With a great influx of Hispanic parishioners in the last ten years, this parish has been transformed from a dying, aging congregation to a vibrant, living one. Amazing! There are still a few English speaking parishioners, so services are offerred in both Spanish and English.

This is all background information in order to explain why there were only seven of us at the English Good Friday service. And I think that’s probably counting the priest.

Included in those seven intrepid attendees was a family with small children (not us for a change!). As children do, they made a little noise during Mass. And, as it turns out, it’s hard to hide in a crowd like ours.

After the service, as we were all leaving and shaking Father’s hand, the mother of the kids said, “I’m so sorry they were loud during Mass, Father.”

Father looked up at all of us, smiled and said, “That’s ok. You know what’s worse than children in Mass?”

We shook our heads.

“Only old people.”

His joke took me by such surprise, I’m pretty sure I snorted.

Happy Friday!

Tomorrow, Andy and I are off for a weekend ALONE! What?! My brave, brave sister Jessie is watching the girls as I head out for a hiking photography class. We’ll also be celebrating our 6th Wedding Anniversary!

And speaking of babies, check out this photo:3

Strange. That was just yesterday, I swear…

But also a lifetime ago, I’m sure.

Alleluia!

My camera is ok! I can pick it up tomorrow. Thank you camera techs, thank you readers (aka pray-ers) and thank you God!

Now I can keep taking and publishing and cherishing adorable pictures like this one:cuteness

And memorable ones like this one:cuteness-2

Phew!

I give Andy full permission to ask me where the camera is every night before we go to bed, without becoming the least bit indignant. Promise.

Uh Oh…

Digging-2So, I may or may not have left my beautiful DSLR outside, overnight, in the pouring rain…

It may or may not be in the shop as we speak with camera techs doing their best to resuscitate it…

Say a little prayer, will ya? I know there are way more important things to pray for, but this one possession really does bring me an awful lot of joy.

I also have two photography courses soon.

My awesome sister arranged a two-day, hiking, landscape photography class by Randal Hodges for me at the beginning of June (plus Andy and I get a night away over our anniversary weekend! Woohoo!).

I’ve also signed up for a “Snaphot” course with blogger Ashley Ann for three weeks starting mid-June.  She takes great photos of her kids, which is pretty much what I do all day (though, I’m still working on the “great” part).

And that is, honestly, why I am the most mad at myself. Disappointed even. I’m not capturing moments with my kids. Sure, I know, I’m experiencing these moments, and I’m doing my darndest to absorb and file them away in my brain. But here’s the thing: I’m pretty sure my brain is full. Or my memory is broken. Or something.

For me, a photo is like a recall button. I can look at it and I’m instantly back in that moment, reliving it. I also notice details that get lost in the every day getup-eat-play-eat-sleep-play-eat-go-to-bed crazy rush that is our life. How blue Mo’s eyes are, or how goofy Lu’s smile is. I truly see how my girls have changed when I compare them to a photo I took a month ago.

Photos are mini time capsules.

I’d like to keep making them.

So, Lord, (and I’m not even being a little bit sarcastic here) if it is your will, please, please, please let the camera be save-able. I can’t promise that I won’t leave it outside again… my life is full of distraction. But I can promise that I will keep using it for Your good. For preserving moments and memories. For documenting Your beautiful creations that You have entrusted to me. Amen.

….

Here’s some recent images off the SD card, which (Thank Heaven) was not wet.

THOSE Neighbors

We’ve been a little busy here at Casa Elder.Chickens

Or, should I say The Elder Farm?

Between converting the front yard to a garden over Mother’s Day weekend and installing a chicken coop ready with six laying hens yesterday, we’re starting to get strange looks from the neighbors.

As my friend Abbie drove away (they were her chickens, by the way) she yelled from her car, “Every weekend you guys look a little more hippie!”Chickens-2

And, you know what?

That’s fine by us (minus the whole “free love” thing and experimental drugs, and such).

Plenty more pictures to come… I probably only took, like, a million.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider Went Where?

This is how we like our kids right before bed. On the edge of manic.

Andy and I watched this video, probably a dozen times last night. For whatever reason it just gets funnier with each viewing.

Or we could just be ridiculously sleep deprived…

Either way, turn the volume up and listen to the “words” she sings. Try to find the moment she realizes she can see herself in the mirror and also the ABC reset.
