Saints- Definition: People who help you move.

If you’re here from BuzzFeed, hello!

They snagged that picture from this just normal, every-day post here on the blog. If you’re looking for something particularly funny or thought provoking, head over to the Best of TOTE. Or, get to know us better here.

Thanks for stopping by!

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I have decided that my In-Laws are living saints. Do you want to know why?

They came down for an entire weekend in April to help us paint the inside of the new house. Mind you, the paint before wasn’t peeling or even that old…it was just all yellow. It wasn’t a necessity to paint, just a convenience before we moved in our furniture. (By the way, thanks to everyone who commented on that previous post with color suggestions. We really did appreciate them!)

Bob steamed and scraped this wall for a full day in order to get that stupid line of wall paper off the wall. An entire day of both hands at shoulder height while standing on a ladder…We definitely owe him a massage…or at least a couple more beers.

While he was doing that, Julie was painting walls like a pro. And look at how amazing they turned out!

Mo’s room is just as I pictured it. It reminds me of Disney and Pooh Bear and nature…Pretty much it makes me want to burst into song.

We changed out the yellow in our bedroom for three beige walls and a blue accent wall. Decorations will be mostly beach-inspired, white framed items for a fresh calming feeling. Heck, if I’m feeling crazy, I might just add in a royal purple throw pillow or two! I’m very seriously considering something like this, but with purple tentacles. How cool would that be?

I am happy to say that the TV/Living room is no longer neon green/yellow! After Bob spent all day scraping off that wall paper, we (meaning Julie, Bob and Andy) painted most of the walls the same beige from our bedroom, and the fireplace wall a mocha brown. At a later date (hopefully not that far into the future) the trim and fireplace mantle will be painted white, and to lighten the mocha we plan to decorate with white-framed pictures and mirrors.

And then, as if they hadn’t already done enough, Julie and Bob joined us the following weekend to help us move all our stuff. In fact, they came in the middle of the week to scrub the house from ceiling to floor so that I wouldn’t have to. How amazing is that? Gotta love those guys!

Doesn’t moving look like so much fun? Especially moving a hide-a-bed-couch? Thanks for pretending everyone!

Moving weekend we were blessed to have an abundance of help. Friends and family came from all over to lift heavy items in exchange for pizza, beer and my eternal gratitude. Saints, every single one of them! Some even brought necessary house appliances! Dad fit a washer, dryer and golden retriever in the back of their 4-Runner. Impressive to say the least! We are still flabbergasted by all the love, and I’m sure I’ll be loaning out my husband to help move things for many years to come. Karma, baby.

My job mostly involved watching Mo. Or taking pictures of other people watching Mo. It’s a hard life I lead… Actually, I spent most of my time getting yelled at for trying to lift things. Oops…

Now that we’re in the house, there is still a lot to be done. We’re living in a quasi-unpacked state, which translates into: GIANT MESS.

Here’s a keepin’ it real picture per request from my mother.

But, it’s ok. Honestly, the weather has been so beautiful recently, I don’t regret for one second that Mo and I spend more time outside in our backyard than inside organizing. It’ll all get put away eventually. Probably, knowing my super-organized awesome husband, much sooner than I imagine. Gotta love that guy too.

Side note, the previous owners left some interesting items behind. This includes a creepy large bear statue that would gaze directly into my soul through the kitchen window.

At the very end of our busy moving weekend, Dad and Andy (and Mo of course) turned the bear to face the road. It has now been officially dubbed the “guard bear” by my mother. Honestly, I would be perfectly happy if one morning I woke up and it was gone. I tried to pawn it off on Mom and Dad, but they made some excuse of not enough room in the back of the 4-Runner with the dog. Ha! Like I’m going to believe that!

Mostly I just love this picture. I can imagine Mo yelling all sorts of things, but mostly I think “ROAR! This is my house now and it is AWESOME!” or something along those lines.

I feel the same way Mo. Woohoo!

Baby Face

There she is! How beautiful is that face? I just want to kiss those little cheeks.

Isn’t ultrasound technology amazing? It seems a little like cheating to see her face so clearly before she’s on the outside.

So, some of you may be thinking. An ultrasound at 30ish weeks? Why? I know a 20 week ultrasound is normal, so why the extra?

See, that’s the other thing about ultrasounds, sometimes they reveal too much…

Earlier in this pregnancy, at the 20 week ultrasound actually, the technician found an anomaly named Persistent Right Umbilical Vein (PRUV from here on out to save both my brain and my fumbling fingers). Without going into too many science-y details (just for you Jess) babies start off with two umbilical veins, and around week seven, go down to just one.  Who knew? The umbilical cord generally has one vein and two arteries. In most babies, it’s the left vein that sticks around, but in our sweet little girl it is her right (thus the persistent part of the diagnosis).

In isolation, PRUV is not a big deal. In combination with other “markers” (heart defects, cleft palette etc) it can be an indicator for a chromosomal disorder.

Mind you, this was all explained to us by our doctor via email. I would certainly have preferred a phone call…But, much to the detriment of face-to-face (or even ear-to-ear) patient/doctor interactions, email is another great technological advance of our society.

Anyway. Between our initial scan and our rescheduled ultrasound we prayed. We prayed hard. We asked many of you to pray. We prayed that our hearts would be open to any outcome. We already loved this little girl so much. Ultimately, we arrived at the perinatologist’s (at-risk baby doctor) office with a sense of peace.

And, as most of you know, everything was fine. Our ultrasound tech was chatty and lovely, willing to indulge all our super nerdy science questions. And ultimately the doctor said PRUV was the only anomaly. “Probably, before we used ultrasounds so frequently, many babies were born with this condition, and we didn’t even know the difference.”

See how I’m bringing this back to the beginning?

The ultrasound today was just to double, triple check that Baby is fine. And she is. She’s growing like crazy and is above average for head circumference (no surprise there!). Her estimated weight is 4lbs 7oz, and she’ll double her weight in the next 9 weeks. That giant head plus weight guesstimate has me thinking ouch! So, we received the all clear today and are officially a low-risk pregnancy…again. Well, turns out, we were all along…

Side note: can you imagine if we could double our weight in 9 weeks? I’m pretty sure we would die… Babies are amazing!

At this moment, I can gaze lovingly at these pictures and see the beautiful baby girl we truly adore…But, several months ago, I was an emotional wreck while we waited for answers.

So, ultrasounds…I love ’em. But I hate ’em.

And, yes. I can hold two conflicting beliefs in my brain at the same time. I’m going to blame that on preggo brain. I am also blaming preggo brain for locking my keys in the car day before yesterday. Luckily Mo was already out and we were at the library. If you’re going to be locked out of your car, the library is a great place to be.

And the company wasn’t too bad…minus the kicking and screaming when we had to leave, but I think that comes hand-in-hand with the cuteness…

(No, this picture wasn’t taken at the library, it’s Mo trying to carry all of her “peeps” at a time, and too cute not to post…I think that’s chocolate on her face, or maybe dirt…)

PS Bob and Julie, thanks for the AAA membership! It would have taken Andy a long time to get to us by bus.

I can’t end this post with Mo-bug because it’s supposed to be about #2, so here’s one last (little bit fuzzy) 3-D image of her cute little face. We’ll be able to compare these pictures to the real thing in T-minus 8-ish weeks. Oh man, all of a sudden that doesn’t seem like a very long time. I better go clean something…or eat some ice cream. Hmm…She does have quite a bit of weight to put on…I definitely choose ice cream.

PPS Thanks for your prayers and positive vibes. We certainly felt and still feel them. Feel free to keep ’em coming. This journey is far from over.

We’re In!

Phew.

Moving is hard. This is how Mo feels about it:

However, we were blessed with good weather an abundance of help and love. It was incredibly humbling to watch. And watch I did. I wasn’t allowed to move anything. Fancy that.

It’s late and we have a very important appointment in the morning: another ultrasound! We get to see our beautiful (and growing) #2 again. Yay!

So, I’m sure I’ll have more to write tomorrow, including new pictures of our precious #2. And A LOT more photos of the moving process. But for now, time to go to sleep. In our bed. In our house. That makes me feel like this:

30 Weeks and Counting

Good morning! I forgot to post this yesterday on “Two’s-day,” so here’s your baby bump update, just a day late.

Woo-ie, she is out there!

We hit 30 weeks gestation last Friday, which means (dun, dun, dun!) less than 10 weeks to go before #2 makes her appearance. I’m feeling pretty dang good.  Between the Flu, packing, moving and life in general, I haven’t been able to exercise in 3ish weeks. I can certainly feel that in my back. But, there is always tomorrow. I plan on starting water aerobics again next week. That pool will feel wonderful!!

There is A LOT to do before #2 arrives, including: move into the new house. That is happening this weekend. Please pray for sunny skies!!! Huge thanks to our parents and friends who are coming out (rain or shine) to help.

By the way, if lifting and moving heavy objects in return for pizza and beer happens to be your favorite thing in the whole wide world AND you’re located close to Portland, feel free to come on over and help! We certainly wouldn’t turn you away.

Hmm…I should probably start packing huh?

Andy and I took a refresher course last night on “Relaxation Techniques for Labor.” I definitely laughed…Relax? During labor? Ha! HA HA HA! ha! HA HA HA…ha…ha…oh man (thanks for allowing me a moment of hysterical laughter-turned panic…I feel much better now). Actually the class really helped us (mostly me) focus and set some goals for #2’s delivery. That will be a post all it’s own.

We did tour the birthing center. Two words: Jacuzzi tub. In every room! Apart from the bathtub that I never plan on leaving, the environment is peaceful and beautiful. Andy says the most important part is the extra large couch that he can rest on. I say, “Rest? What’s that? And when, exactly, do you plan on doing this ‘resting‘?”

And then I remember what it is like to have a brand new baby. And they do rest. They sleep a lot. Thank you God!

Post coming soon: The rooms are painted! Thanks for all your suggestions. I think the house looks amazing. And a HUGE thank you to Bob and Julie for coming out last weekend to do it! It wouldn’t have happened with out you!

Mo-isms

22 Months

She loves to say hello by lifting up her shirt to show you her “bee-bo”. She knows you have one too, so you better share!

She runs naked from the potty through the house several times, screaming with joy, before getting into bath. Naked babies are my favorite.

She has recently learned the word “mine!” which she uses frequently (thanks Mom…). Actually, it will be a very important word for her once #2 is here.

Speaking of speaking, she’s working on it. She has a few words: Mama (a very recent development, like in the last week. I can’t tell you how happy I am that she is finally saying “Mama” and uses the word to refer to me!! She has figured out that there is power in the ability to call on me), Daddy, Mo, mine, all-done, Pooh (as in Winnie the…) hat, and hot. Between her verbal words and her sign-language I pretty much always know what she needs. I’m starting to think I’m an enabler though, finishing her sentences,  interpreting grunts…I’m going to have to break out the tough love and make her say words. Sometimes, I can’t help but worry that she’s almost two and not really talking yet, then she’ll combine a whole bunch of words and signs to say something like “Mo goes in the car” and I know she’ll be fine. She’s a smarty pants.

Here are a couple of Andy’s recent favorites. Mo, if you’re reading this someday, you should know that he is an amazing father, and you adore him!

In his words:
I returned from an overnight work trip to find Mo totally enthralled by Elmo. She barely even looked at me. Later that evening (during her nightly-naked-run-around) I asked for a hug and she sprinted to me, threw her arms around my neck and said “Dadadadadadada,” giving me the biggest hug ever.

I love how she’ll pin toys/food/whatever between her chin, chest and hand when she needs to carry more than her little hands can manage.

She gets a bashful smile when I ask her name and then exclaims “Mo!”. Favorite!

When I get home, she very deliberately grabs my hand, walks me to her room and points to the floor where I should sit. Then she grabs a book and sits down on my lap to read.

She loves to open packages we get in the mail.

In the car she takes her shoes of, pulls off her socks, and then puts her shoes back on (side note from Cait: I gave Andy a lot of grief a couple weeks ago when I thought he put her shoes on the wrong feet…turns out Mo did that all by herself…oops, sorry Love!)

I love it when her hair is up; she looks so big.

Cait here again.  I am thankful we have this way to record our Mo-isms. Some day (probably sooner rather than later, honestly) we’ll read back through these blog posts and revisit all these little things we thought we’d never forget. They are worth remembering.

Big Girl

I sent Andy this rather fuzzy phone image to show off Mo’s fancy-pants hair style. Which, by the way, she kept in her hair for over an hour! Unheard of!

His almost immediate response back (in text form) “OH MY GOSH when did we get a little girl?!?! Aaaaaaahhhhhhh…*deep breath, sigh*”

My thoughts exactly…

Another thought: I don’t see the back of her neck nearly enough. I love it! We should work on more pony tails, I think.

Tulips and Cameras

We drove out to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest in Woodburn, Oregon today. With the amazing colors and sunny day, it was hard to take a bad picture.

And it doesn’t matter what type of camera you have!

Here’s a neat pic I snapped of Mo looking at a honey bee (Nikon D3100).

Here’s a pic that Andy took of me snapping a pic of Mo looking at a honey bee (iPhone 4s).

And here’s a pic that our friend Janelle took of Andy taking a picture of me snapping a pic of Mo looking at a honey bee (iPhone 3GS).

Whoa! That’s deep… Just a little behind, behind the scenes for ya!

Happy weekend! Hope yours is as full of color and sunshine as ours has been!
