The Inside! And, I Need a Little Help

Yesterday, Mo and I spent part of the morning at our house, adding the necessities for the next several weeks. You know: TP, paper towels, and a Pooh Bear pillow-pet. What? That’s not a necessity? Mo begs to differ! Pooh is, in fact, one of the only words she can actually articulate at the moment.

The more I’m at the house, the more I love it! I snapped some photos of the empty inside in order to get some help. Yes. From you.

See, the house is yellow. All yellow. Inside. Outside. Upside-down (name that book all you Mamas out there). Which is fine. I love yellow. Some of my favorite things are yellow: the sun, sunflowers, sunshine…and did I mention the sun? However, the inside is three distinct shades of yellow. Kind of an ochre in the livingroom. Pale yellow in all the bedrooms, the hallway and the kitchen. And a greenish-neon yellow in the TV room. You’ll see what I mean. So, we have some painting to do, and the reality is that Andy and I are way out of our element. I desperately need my very artistic sisters or mother to help us out (and any of the rest of you with an opinion!).

I apologize in advance for the different picture sizes and qualities.

So three questions:

Question #1: Should we leave the front living room ochre?

The previous owners accented with purple and green. It looks great. However, this will soon be transformed into the playroom. Picture lots of toys, a felt wall, a chalkboard, the piano we’re getting from my parents, and tiny hands and feet all over. The big window in this room is south facing. So, we should have some beautiful sunshine in this room…well, on the days the sun shines…

Question Number 2: Am I crazy?

Wait, don’t answer that.

There are two small bedrooms (with the cutest window seats). One will be for the girls, the other will be a guest/craft/misc room. Here’s the crazy part where perhaps I need a little input. For the girlies, I have the following in mind: paint the bottom half of the walls green and the top half blue. Then I can paint a palm tree and monkey in a corner. He he he! And we can get this RC powered solar system mobile for the ceiling (which I just found out thinkgeek.com is no longer selling, boo!)!

Too much? If not, what shades will match the red-ish wood floor?

The following is not one of the aforementioned 3 questions:

The kitchen/dining area will be left as is. I enjoy the pale yellow here; it’s cheery. That’s important when it’s always grey outside. We might do a little wainscoting in the dining area, just to make it stand out a bit, but nothing major.

Question #3: What to do with our neon TV/Livingroom?

By way of transition and comparison, here’s a pic from the kitchen looking into the TV room (please ignore the angry Mo. And, yes. She does get angry/grumpy/sad/frustrated sometimes. Especially if I’m not doing exactly what she wants. Which, in this case, is going outside to pick dandelions…).

See the neon-ness of that living area compared to the calming yellow of the kitchen? That, my friends, needs to change.

Here’s the same room, with the slider to the outside. The yellow really is as neon as the above pic. We have a pellet stove along the far wall you see here (that’s a shared wall with the kitchen for those of you trying to keep perspective in this super unorganized post).

We’ll paint the trim white. Take down the butterfly wall paper and plaid curtains. But then what to do? Any color suggestions?

Thanks for “listening”. It seems like a lot to take on at 28wks preggo, with an almost 2 year old, and with a husband who works full time…I’m just glad we have awesome friends and family who are willing to help (Hint, hint. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink).

You can still go ahead and call me I’m crazy. I won’t mind. But you have to make a paint color suggestion first…

First Things First

Andy picked up our keys to our house Good Friday. Our plan for Easter was to do a small egg hunt in our empty house and backyard and then bake cookies. The flu decided that we would go to Mass and then all take a nap on Sunday instead.

Therefore, our cookie-baking-house-initiation happened today. Complete with a Costco pizza picnic in our backyard!

Hey, Mo! That one's mine!

Speaking of the backyard, I am absolutely in love. In love with the yard the way it is, and definitely in love with the changes we’re discussing. Our little house sits towards the front of almost a third of an acre. That translates into an awesome amount of space out back. Check it out:

I can just picture the kids playing in that bamboo corner

180 degrees from this pic is the following fence. Our yard continues behind it, and includes that awesome cherry tree which is just starting to bloom.

Picking flowers. Finding bugs. All the cool things kids get to do.

This corner of the yard was fenced off to protect a garden at some point. We're going to take the fence out but still use this area for chickens and other edible things.

I asked Andy today, “Is it weird that so far I’m way more attached to the yard than the house?

“No,” he replied. We decided that the house still has impressions of the past owners. Holes where pictures were hung. Scuffs from old furniture. We have yet to fill it. To make it ours. The yard, perhaps, is easier to claim. There’s adventuring to be done back there. Who knows what wonderful things we’ll find?

Pictures of the inside coming next! We will definitely need some help deciding paint colors!

Ours!

That’s my handsome husband, holding the key to our brand-spanking-new (to us) home! We were funded and recorded on Thursday. Andy picked up our keys Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, Mo-Bug and I are still recovering from the dastardly Influenza A in Port Angeles, so we weren’t able to be there.

We were recently bemoaning the fact that we’ll have to carry both our lease and mortgage  for a month, but I’m starting to realize that it will be a blessing. I cannot imagine getting moved in the next week, or even the next couple of weeks. I’m not much good for lifting heavy objects (although, I do lift Mo quite often…), and we’re all still coughing up our lungs. It’s very appropriate that this transition will take a little time. There’s so much to do: packing, packing, and more packing (I’m very, very happy that we’re still semi-packed from our move in November!!). Not to mention the fun stuff to do, like picking out paint colors and deciding where furniture will go.

Mmmm, furniture. Don’t get me started. I’m doing a little shopping up here at Casa Labrie. Since my mom has the same furniture addiction that I do (or perhaps, it’s the other way around?), there’s an abundance of desks, chairs and miscellaneous awesomeness with which to fill our house! Like: Giant teddy bears!

Who wouldn’t feel better after lounging with grandma and this guy for a couple days?

Andy drove up last night, so all the sickos are finally together. I think Easter will be a rather subdued  event this year. Our celebration will mostly involve jello and an expectorant. Regardless, come tomorrow, we will rejoice with the rest of you! Our blessings our countless.

That's our backyard!!

Stay Far, Far Away

Casa Elder has been pretty subdued for the last several days. We’re all fighting a nasty flu-bug. Our agenda has included: cuddling, sleeping and eating. And Elmo. Lots and lots of Elmo.

So, unless you want to join us in hacking up a lung or two, I advise staying far, far away.

On a related note, Mo and I are headed up to Port Angeles for a couple days to stay with my parents. In my mother’s words “My Baby’s germs aren’t germie to me! Come!” I’m pretty sure my immune system didn’t get that message each time Mo sneezed in my face. But, hey! What’s family for, if not for sharing?

The short visit will be well-spent resting and being cared-for. That’s a wonderful feeling. Not to mention, Andy will actually get some sleep. He pulled more than his fair share with baby night-duty as I desperately tried to avoid catching the flu-bug and then continued night-time ministering once I did get sick (like I keep saying, he’s pretty awesome). So, Andy will get some sleep. I will get some sleep. Mo will get grandma and grandpa time. What could be better? Well, besides not being sick…

I’ll leave you with this funny photo:

It’s not the best picture in the world, but it has a good story. Mo found a spider on our porch outside. It just so happens her favorite song in the whole wide world is “The Itsy-Bisty Spider”. So, at least once a day, she starts making the signs that accompany the song and points outside, usually just minutes after Andy gets home from work. She then firmly takes his hand and leads him to the sliding glass door so that they can do their daily Itsy-Bitsy visitation. She points, laughs, and dances while they sing the song.

Soon, we will have a yard of our own and I can show her all the bugs that live in a real garden! I bet she’ll even share my love of worms. Speaking of which (well, speaking of a yard, not speaking of worms), we had all better feel well by the end of the week, because….

Drum roll please…

WE GET THE KEYS TO OUR HOUSE ON FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!

Oh man, home ownership…what a crazy adventure we’re starting…and we’re ridiculously excited. Much more to come. Once my head stops spinning…

Random Musings

Nothing profound or earth-shattering today, just a couple musings:

We went to the main Vancouver library on Sunday, and it was awesome! They have an entire children’s floor, filled with colored tepees and toys and learning tools and books (of course). Mo was ridiculously over-stimulated, and ultimately had a melt down when we tried to go explore the adult sections of the library. That’s ok. We were all getting tired and hungry, not a good combination for an almost-two-year-old, a pregnant lady and a getting-sick husband…but the library remains awesome. And we will go back again!

Not her dolly...but that's ok

Speaking of the husband, can I tell you how awesome he is? He is so awesome that he has won two giveaways in the last week. Not one, two! (I’m about to reveal how geeky our family is, so just try to remain impressed that he won something(s)). The first was a game from the online board game store Myriad Games. They sent him a first edition of Nightfall, which he had a chance to play at GAMESTORM (a board game convention he and our friend Cole went to this past Saturday).

Mo might have been even more excited to open the box than Andy...

I did warn you that these prizes would reveal how ridiculously geeky we are, right? Ok. So, second prize: a Catanimal.  For those of you not familiar with the Catan universe and resulting paraphernalia, a Catanimal is a plush version of one of the “resources” you collect during the game Settlers of Catan (ore, sheep, wood or brick). This awesome prize is from Mayfair games, the company that does Settlers in the US. I’m pretty sure, out of the two prizes, I’m more excited about the plush doll than the actual game…

Seriously, how cute is that?

Two prizes! I told him to go buy a lotto ticket.

Now for something completely different: I have a new best friend. She is sleek, efficient, stainless steel, and can cook beef stew in 13 minutes flat. That’s right, we now have a pressure cooker! I’m not sure I can convey how ridiculously happy this makes me. Now, our weekly rice and beans night takes 3 minutes to cook instead of an hour. And, did I already mention that I made beef stew tonight in 13 minutes?? (Minus prep time of course). All you friends out there shaking your heads, please remember I am currently 26 weeks into growing another little human, and you may chalk all this domestic blathering up to nesting if you like… However, I am honestly this crazy in love with it:

Thumbs up. For realz, yo.

Last, but not least: Mo and I made play dough yesterday. It may deserve a post of its own. Let’s just say, I now have a “crafting” sweater, which is peppered with red food coloring, my fingernails are still blue, and Mo only ate one mouthful.

Mmm mmm mmm...salty

I call that a win.

P.S. We sign for the house tomorrow! AHHHH!!!!! I went to the bank today to get a cashier’s check for a ridiculous amount of money… I guess this is really happening. More pics and thoughts about that coming soon!

Wordless Weekend

Mini-Vacay

Last weekend the elder Elders (Andy’s parents, hardy-har-har) invited us all out to Cannon Beach. They will often rent a little house on the coast during summer vacation, and this was the first time they tried it in the (cheaper) off-season. We prepared for snow, rain, sleet, hail, cold water…and more cold.

What we got instead was a beautiful sunny Saturday. Perfect for walking the beach in bare feet and digging in the sand.

Below is one of my favorite photos from the weekend:

At first glance, it simply looks like a super cool Tim, leaping the raging river. If you look extra close though…

You can see that he’s actually holding Mo (See her arm? Conveniently the same color as the sand…). What to do when an impromptu beach visit means your daughter isn’t wearing the proper foot protection? Give her to Super Uncle! Problem solved.

This particular beach excursion also resulted in some of my favorite Tim/Andy/Mo photos of all time, like this one and this one:

And, what would the beach be without a little hippie-beach-yoga? Who loves tree pose? I do!The gorgeous weather lasted just long enough for Andy, Mo and I to get home on Sunday. Julie, Bob and Tim “enjoyed” snow and rain for the rest of the trip. I imagine it was actually quite restful to just sit in front of the fire and read to the tune of the waves.

I wish I could say we brought the sun home to Vancouver with us, but it was rainy and gross all week. Including snow yesterday! Mo and I went outside to play in the white stuff and she did all sorts of cute and photographic things. Of course, the battery on my camera was dead. So, you’ll just have to imagine her tromping through the snow in her snow suit and rain boots, touching lethargic flies, picking up pine cones and puddle jumping (well, splashing…we’re not quite jumping yet).

The sun is out today! Hooray! I think after nap we’ll take a walk. After hearing all about Jessie and Corey’s 80 degree days out in St. Louis, I need proof that Spring is coming. We’ll go look for blossoming trees and daffodils, and find some vitamin D along the way.

Blast From the Past

I love photos. I mean, I really love photos. I get lost for hours looking through photo albums. If I visit your home, the first thing I’ll be distracted by is photographs you have on display. There’s something magical about capturing a singular moment, and in that moment, an entire memory.

So, instead of washing the dishes or doing the laundry today I was browsing the thousands of photos I have stored on my computer. Looking at each photo awakened my other senses and I remembered tastes, smells, feelings, sounds…Most of the photos are from 2005 and beyond, which in the grand scheme of things isn’t that long, and I’m shocked by how much my life has changed.

These photos sit on my hard drive (and an external hard drive, and on a CD in our fire safe, and on a CD in Julie and Bob’s fire safe, and in cloud storage…Andy is nothing if not prepared) waiting to be browsed and used. What better use than to share them with you? So, every once in a while, I’ll post a blast from the past. It will remind me (and you) of what we were doing at this date throughout the years. I hope to some day scan all of my mother’s photos too. Then I’ll really have some oldies but goodies to share.

March 8th, 2005

Don’t we look like babies? I think we had been dating for a whopping year and a half by this point. Andy’s grandparents graciously invited us two lovebirds down to CA to spend our Spring Break having a blast with them! They took us to Universal Studios, and Sea World and a million other fantastic places. More than the places though, I remember spending time getting to know Grandma Frances and Grandpa Bob (or Great-Grandma and Grandpa as they’re known now). It was wonderful to get to know these two grandparents who mean so much to my husband. They are beautiful people with generous souls.

March 17th, 2006

Disney Land!! Our first family vacation in a long, long time. Jess, Cor, before you complain that this is not a very good photo, let me ask you a question. Do you know how hard it is to find a photo of the three of us where one of us is not goofy? I’ll just tell you: it’s very difficult. So, this one will have to do. Anyway, we grew up singing Disney songs at the top of our lungs. Don’t believe me? I dare you to spend 5 minutes around my family (well, my mom, sisters and I…Dad’s not one for belting show tunes) without someone quoting, singing, humming a song from Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, or Aladdin. It’s in our blood. I swear our little red blood cells swim along merrily singing Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It’s off to work we go. So, obviously, this was truly a magical vacation for us all. Even though it rained, and I was grumpy because I got cold. Cold is my enemy. My Jafar. My Sher Khan. My Evil Stepmother. My…well, you get it. Good thing I have two grounded sisters who can snap me out of even the deepest pity party. We’re in Disney Land, for goodness sake!

Nothing good in 2007…well, scratch that. We graduated from college, got married and left for Brazil in 2007, but no good photos from March…

March 19th, 2008

Not the best photo from Brazil, but one of my favorites. Andy and I helped install a gravity shower in a small village that hopes to receive some eco-tourists (and by helped, I mean we bought the supplies and then watched an amazing community work together for a day to build it). Some foreigners can be a little funny about taking bucket baths. These little kids marched the barrel away to be washed chanting “Formiginhas!” Little Ants. They couldn’t lift the barrel individually, so they took a cue from nature and worked together. Man, Brazil has some serious ants…serious bugs all around (this is a facebook album Andy and I kept of all the creepy crawlies we saw while there).
This however, is one of my most favorite photos. I can’t even remember his name…and that makes me a little sad. But I do remember how proud he was to make his little kite out of floss and a plastic bag, and how brave I thought he was to climb all over that rock to fly it high above the Brazilian wilderness.

March 7th, 2009

Andy and I caught in a snow storm in Fort Collins while touring CSU. Our decision to choose Utah over Colorado for Andy’s graduate studies was difficult. What if we had gone to CO? Would we have made friends? Would I have an RNWould Mo exist? Would Andy have a job now? What ifs are easy to obsess about, and we must trust that everything happened just the way it was supposed to. Not to mention, Utah faculty and students are much better at wining and dining potential graduate students. At least in the bio-engineering department. We made great friends, and we sorely miss the community we built in Logan.

March 19th, 2010

So, a long time ago, someone (who will remain unnamed) backed into the rear driver side door of the green Honda Accord my mom drove, rendering it useless. It remained that way for many a year, and (after inheriting the car for college) it became part of my ride-giving ritual to tell people “Oh, that door doesn’t work. You’ll have to go around.” Friends got used to it, and we all lived happily with 3 doors for a long time. Until Mo made an appearance. We decided 4 doors would be the best option, what with a baby and all. So Julie and Bob helped us snag a new-to-us shiny (silver) door from a junk yard. Andy and Bob performed the successful operation. And I am happy to say that the door works great. Now, however, we are those people. You know, the ones with a door that’s a different color than the rest of the car. Yeah…we’re cool. We know it.

March 17th, 2011

And, we finally make it to last year. Oh my goodness, how Mo-bug has changed. Here she’s being a huge help with the laundry. It’s funny, cause now I can say she actually does help. She’ll transfer clothes to the dryer. She’ll carry clean clothes to the couch. March 2013 we’ll have another little girl who may (or may not) look a lot like this little girl, probably “helping” me in much the same way, as I wash the same cloth diapers. But that’s looking to the future, and this post is about the past.

Thanks for taking this trip down memory lane with me. I promise they won’t all be this long…well, hopefully not. Next time maybe I’ll let the whole A picture is worth 1000 words thing work for me, cause I’m running out of words. Thank goodness for photographs.

24 Weeks and Counting

I officially dub this day of the week Two’sDay, as in all about Baby E #2.

Over here at Casa Elder, Baby #2 continues to grow…and grow…and grow. They say she’s about a foot long (banana!) and weighs almost a pound. There’s no way to know any of those statistics for certain, but I do know she enjoys kicking my bladder an awful lot.

Some small differences so far between Mo and #2:

My stomach muscles didn’t even put up a fight this time. They remember the strain and difficulty of clinging together as my belly stretched and stretched and stretched. I’m convinced that as soon as #2 existed all those muscles let out a collective sigh of relaxation and relief. Everyone says you show much sooner with subsequent babies, and I know it’s because of those darn lazy muscles!

Case in point: Mo on L, #2 on R. I purposefully didn't make the pictures the same size in hopes of concealing my hugeness, but to no avail. Baby #2 is Out There!

I’m not putting up a fight. Actually, what I mean is that I’m not frantically researching every ache and pain. I’m not obsessing over every birth preparation class and self-hypnosis method. I feel confidant in this pregnancy. Mostly, I’m not freaking out…mostly.

I’m freaking out more. Ok, I lied a little above. I am most definitely more emotional with #2. I was certain #2 was a boy and that his testosterone was making me volatile. Nope. She’s most definitely a girl. Which means I can’t entirely blame our growing baby for the increase in emotional upheaval. Granted, we did move, are in the process of buying a house, and I do have an almost 2 year old to take care of. There’s a lot going on in our lives right now, and I am more thankful than ever for Andy’s calm, collected and organized manner.

There will be more differences, I’m sure. But for now, I think that’s enough. Here’s one of the most adorable photos we have of #2 so far.

Tee hee! Baby foot!

Andy’s been able to feel her kick from the outside. Sometimes, I catch him staring wistfully at my extended belly as I rub a particularly pokey prod.

What?” I ask.

I just wish I could feel that too. You know, from the inside. It must be amazing,” he replies.

I forget that sometimes…how truly amazing pregnancy is. There is another human being growing inside me….

Whoa…

So I just sit in the awe and majesty of the One who Creates. And thank Him for the opportunity to be a vessel. I don’t know how else to react to such awesomeness…

Speaking of #2…I need to find something better to call her. We haven’t picked a name yet, so even if we were going to tell people (which we aren’t) that wouldn’t help…Any suggestions?
