Science Wins

microscope-2Out of the entire Seaside Aquarium, she just kept going back to this one thing. She even had me write microscope under “best part of your visit” in the guestbook.

Let’s Get Crafty: Christmas Edition

Gingerhouse-5I try to get through Michael’s as quickly as possible. There are too many shiny things that cause hours of distraction, and that’s when I shop alone.

When the kiddos are with me, I’m tempted to throw whatever little thing into the teeny-tiny cart that will keep them distracted. This is usually with the intention of casually handing it to the cashier, “Oh, I changed my mind.”

This time round it was a gingerbread house, and there ain’t no way I was going to pry that from Mo’s grasp to give it back.

In reality, it was a great purchase because we have a visitor right now who’s never made a gingerbread house before.

My host sister from Brazil, Ana Clara, is visiting on her Christmas break from studying at Illinois State University!

So, I asked Mo which of the pictures she wanted her house to look most like, and she said the one on the right:Gingerhouse-7

Gingerhouse-8Nailed it!

(No extra charge for sarcasm here, people!)

Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m a mediocre crafty-mom at best. So, you know what? The crooked walls and dripping icing and licked candy doesn’t bother me one bit. Gingerhouse-10 Gingerhouse-6 Gingerhouse-9

Because we got a lot of smiles.

Lighting the Tree

Tree Lighting-9Happy (belated) Feast day, Little Lulu!

Last year, our tree failed. We hosted Christmas, and when my mom arrived she asked, “Why isn’t your tree decorated? Where are the lights?”

“What? Tree? Huh? Where am I?…” I replied in a hostess-induced daze.

See? Fail.

So, this year, we decided to start a new family tradition. The tree is to be lit on the feast of St. Lucy.

December 13th.

And so we did.Tree Lighting-2 Tree Lighting-3 Tree Lighting-4 Tree Lighting Tree Lighting-5

We plan to trim the tree Christmas Eve, in preparation for Jesus’ birthday. Kind of like decorating for a party!

Although I do have one “ornament” already on the tree:Tree Lighting-7

Because, oh my goodness, have you seen this belly:Tree Lighting-6

Apparently, Mary’s not the only one preparing for a baby this season…

“Christmas is Coming…

White Christmas-16The Preggo‘s getting fat, won’t you please…”

Ha ha…ha. Well, not fat exactly, but certainly big. 24 weeks today! I’m slowly realizing that this will be a spring baby boy. So different from my two summer baby girls. I think the ball will drop, the year will turn 2014, and bam! All of a sudden, I’ll have a third kid. Someone slow down the clock just a little, k?

We’ve been in full Advent swing here. Celebrating St. Nich’s day with gifts from Andy’s Godmother and parents:White Christmas-2-2 White Christmas-8 White Christmas-6 White Christmas-7 White Christmas-5

Collecting our Christmas tree on the second sunday of Advent, with hot (warm) cocoa afterwards:White Christmas-10 White Christmas-11 White Christmas-9 White Christmas-14 White Christmas-13 White Christmas-12 White Christmas-15

And enjoying the snow!  It’s supposed to turn to rain later this week, but we’ve been watching it none the less:White Christmas White Christmas-3 White Christmas-2

Maybe I should start humming, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…”

So Proud

Got this message from Andy:Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 9.19.56 AM

You read that right.

He passed the PE, Baby! Woohoo! Thank you to everyone who prayed for him on the day of his exam.

I am now married to a Professional Engineer. Oo la la. Doesn’t that sound a little bit sexy? I certainly think so. And I’m so dang proud. I almost typed a bad word there…but that’s weird to read. Right? Am I the only one who thinks it’s more awkward to read foul language than say it?

Anyway…

My Love,

Thanks for working so hard, studying so much, and yet somehow sacrificing so little of our time. Maybe now you can finally rest easy and catch up on sleep…

DSC_4777Ha! ha ha! Funny joke. Oh kids…

Well, at least you don’t have to spend hours and hours studying any more and take another eight hour exam. Phew. Nicely done, Love.

I knew you could do it.

A Dose of Christmas

Thanksgiving-30Thanksgiving-21Before we left Richland last weekend, we made a stop at Beaver Bark to say hello to the reindeer and get pictures with santa.

Remember Santa pictures last year?

Well, this year didn’t go much better.Thanksgiving-29

Until we got the whole crew involved, and moved the girls off of Santa’s lap. Then there were some smiles.

The “Kids”:Thanksgiving-16

The Elders:Thanksgiving-17

The Labries:Thanksgiving-18This last picture should surprise…um…nobody. That’s my family in a nutshell.

If you happen to be in Richland, and need a dose of Christmas, I highly recommend stopping by. It was filled with a million shiny, Christmas-y things!

So much Christmas! = So much Happiness!

Advent Fast

There are very few photos of me on this blog. Usually I’m behind the camera. Right where I like it!IMG_5921

However, in this last Thanksgiving post, I’m in an absurd percentage (like 50%) of those photos. That’s the beauty of being around other photo-philes, like my mom.

What made me sad, though, is that there were no photos of me doing this:Thanksgiving-28 Thanksgiving-26 Thanksgiving-12 Thanksgiving-13 Thanksgiving-11

And that’s what I should be doing more of. Especially now, at this age. Especially now, during Advent.

So, I’m linking up with Haley and cutting out social media for Advent. Specifically, Facebook.

AdventUnplugged

That website is my worst time-suck. And, it may sound silly, but I’m pretty sure leaving it for a while will make me a better mom, a better person, and definitely better prepare my heart for Christmas. I can focus more on what I have and what I have to share.

I’ll still be here. Sending tales of our family life and cute photos into the internet. I’ll just also be reading a book (or 50) with my kiddos.

Happy Advent!

Let’s Get Crafty: Thanksgiving Edition

Get CraftyAdmittedly, I am not a crafty Mom. And, while I am thankful that there are many creative people in the world (like Mo’s teacher), I am ok being a mediocre crafter.

But every once in a while, I run across a pinterested idea that is too cute to pass up. So, Mo and I give it a try.

Voila, our droopy, messy turkey cookies.

Get Crafty-4Crafting with toddlers is a fine balancing act between giggles and frustration (let alone how the kid feels!)

I had grand plans for Mo and I to work as an efficient assembly line. Popping those turkeys out by the half dozen, just in time to awe the whole family for Thanksgiving.

Around the fourth or fifth time I had to tell her to stop licking the oreos (frosting, M&Ms, plates, fingers…ALL THE THINGS), I decided on a different plan of action. See, I’m a quick learner (Ha!).

Get Crafty-2So, we worked patiently on two cookies. One for her, and one for me. We spent time counting out each piece. Discussing where each should go. Debating which was yummier, M&Ms or frosting (both, of course!).

Get Crafty-3Once she was done with her turkey, she ate him. Of course.

At some point, as I started to mass produce the little guys on my own, and Mo was tripping on sugar, I asked her, “Mo, would you like to keep helping me or get down?”

Get Crafty-6“Hmmm…Get down please. But may I please have another M&M first?”

“Yes, my Love. Here you go.”

And there were no tears, for either of us!

Get Crafty-5No tears! That’s my definition of mediocre crafty success.

Get Crafty-8In other news around Casa Elder, Lu has figured out how to catapult food. Quite literally loading up one end of her spoon with a bean or five and using that extra leverage to get surprisingly good distance as she flings them across the room.

Mommy is not amused.

Or, more accurately, Mommy is desperately trying not to laugh while telling Lulu that she is not amused…Get Crafty-7She usually finds the beans later and eats them off the floor.

What?!

What can I say? I’m a mediocre cleaner-Mom too.

One last Mo-ism (a little context: ice tea is in Andy’s blood. With the amount he drinks, it could quite possibly make up a great percentage of his blood volume. He drinks it ALL THE TIME and really, truly enjoys it).

After Andy got home the day our car was stolen, he was pretty tired. It had honestly been a bad day.

He opened the fridge door, and then slowly closed it, leaning his head against its cool, chrome surface.

“Daddy? Why are you sad?” asked Mo.

“We don’t even have any ice tea, ” he replied, rather pathetically.

“It’s ok Daddy! Don’t be sad!” Mo said, leaping from her chair and running to the fridge, “We have beer!”

She pulled the heavy door open and excitedly pointed towards the wine bottles inside.

And, as Andy bent down to scoop Mo up into a tight hug, it might have been the first time he smiled for real that day…

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Next on the list: Advent preparations! Have any good traditions to share?

Anyone, Not Everyone

DSC_6279Mo sings this song several times a day (and when I say “sing”, I actually mean yells at the top of her lungs), “I love ANYONE. ANYONE I LOVE. ANY any anyone, I LOVE. I LOVE LOVE LOVE ANYONE!….”

You get the idea.

I’ve tried gently correcting her, “Everyone, Love. You love everyone, Mo Bug.”

“EVERYONE, ANYONE I love. I love ANY ANY ANYONE!”

It doesn’t bother me any more. Because she’s right. She loves anyone.

Just think about that for a second.

Everyone feels like a group hug. Like you’re embracing the whole world, and everyone’s holding hands singing kumbaya.

Anyone? Now that involves picking a single soul from the whole earth, looking her or him in the eye and saying, “I love you.”

That seems much more difficult to me. That one person could come from prison, from the street. They could be that person that really bugs you at work. They could be mentally unstable, from a completely different generation, different culture… Could I still love that one person?

Mo could. I’m sure of it. Here’s why:

IMG_6356Our car was stolen a couple nights ago. My car, really. Well, I still call it my car, because it was my very first car. The Accord that Andy drove to work was stolen from a hotel parking lot in Tacoma, in the dead of night and driven to who knows where.

It’s a real bummer. And it may seem silly to be mourning its loss. Nothing of earth-shattering importance happened in that car.

Except everything.

IMG_2793During most of my major life events of the last 10 years, that little Honda Accord was in the backdrop:IMG_9830

First date.

First kiss.

First I love you.

Leaving my wedding.

Moving across the country.

Driving to the hospital to deliver my babies, terrified.

Driving away from the hospital with my babies, relieved and still terrified.

Delivering my husband safely to work and safely back to my arms, every day.

Road trips. Fender benders. Sing alongs. Arguments.

Snowy mountain passes. Desolate stretches of desert.

Many, many, many miles.IMG_3138

Life.

My life happened in that car. Every single day.DSC00550 IMG_2790 IMG_3007 IMG_3103 IMG_6352 IMG_5144 IMG_3326

So, it makes sense (at least to me) that I’m sad. That I was angry, even.

I was cursing the person who stole our car (mostly under my breath), while we were driving to church (I know, I know. I’m a saint).

Stupid, no good, rotten, dirty, son of a bad word…It has one silver door and 275,000 miles on it. What are you even going to do with it?

From the back seat Mo starts yelling “ANYONE! I LOVE ANYONE!!…I love ANY, ANYONE!…”

And at first I was annoyed.

“Everyone, Mo. You love everyone,” but she continued on the same way.

And then there was a moment of profound grace.

Anyone? I heard a whisper. Would you love anyone?

I’ve told this story to a couple people, and, spoken, it always comes out a little cheesy. A little self-righteous. But I assure you it was not.

It was humbling.

I sat (well, drove) a little stunned, tears in my eyes. My grumbling turned into prayer.

Ok person, I’m really bummed you took my car. But I also feel an immense sadness for you. I don’t know you, but I imagine that when you were Mo’s age, you didn’t want to grow up to be a car thief. You must need that car more than we do, so I give it up. I forgive you, and I hope that you are loved.

Actually, I know you are loved by at least one person.

She’s yelling it from the back seat.

IMG_2434

IMG_2435I’m still hoping that the car was just taken for a joy ride and is sitting abandoned somewhere. If anyone sees a green Honda Accord with one silver door, looking a little lost, let me know.

UPDATE: The police found our car! Yay! And it’s not even that far away. God is good.
