Blessed Sleep, Blessed Visit

LUCIA SLEPT FOR 6 HOURS LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, I woke myself up in an adrenaline-filled panic checking to make sure that she was still breathing, which made it a little difficult to fall back asleep…and I’m not deluding myself into thinking that this is the beginning of a wonderful sleep habit. But, I’m not dwelling on that. For now…

I feel like a new woman.

Instead of waxing poetic about how wonderful sleep feels, I’ll show you some super cute photos from Great-Grandpa Bob and Great-Grandma Frances’ visit.

We had such a lovely time and were so blessed by their visit.

Y’all come back now, ya hear?!

You’ve got a couple little ones that sure love you (and big ones too)!

2 Year Old Mo-isms

Mo-bug’s language has just exploded recently. She learns and uses new words every day. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been a little concerned. She’s never not had language…I mean, she’s always been able to communicate (those darn double negatives). We decided to teach her sign language when she was pretty little, and  in some ways, it may have delayed her spoken language. There are still words she refuses to say and signs instead, thank you for example. And, when I say “refuses” I mean refuses.

“Mo, say ‘thank you'”

Makes the sign.

“Mo. Look at my mouth. Say ‘thhhhaaaaank youuuuuu'”

Makes the sign again.

“Mo. Please, use your words. Say ‘thank you'”.

“No.”

That’s about how it usually goes when we’re trying to correct the way she says something or teach her a new word and she’s not in the mood….Good times.

I don’t regret for a moment teaching her signs, especially those for “more” and “please” . I’m certain we’ll do the same with Lu. I am sure her ability to express herself, especially in the environment of the high chair, prevented some major melt-downs. However, for some reason, it has made her a little bit hesitant to say words. Especially if she can’t say them exactly right the first time she tries.

Good thing my mom is a pediatric speech language pathologist.

“Don’t worry about it, Caitlin”.

She’s always reassuring me that parents stress too much about whether their kids will talk. They (I) are always comparing their kids to other kids who can recite all the presidents of the United States and carry on a full conversation about the European debt crisis by the time they’re two and a half. Most kids can talk very well by Kindegarten, and if they (Mo) cannot, well, that’s why Mom has a job.

Pretty much every time she visits, Mo gets free therapy. Sweet! And she always has plenty new words by the time Mom drives away.

Therefore, with the belief that Mo will not always talk this way, I choose to document some of the most adorable stories she “tells” us. In reality, you need to have been there or speak Mo-ese to understand what she’s talking about.  Conveniently, I can translate some super-cute Mo-isms for you, because I am now fluent in one language (English) and proficient in two: Portuguese and Mo-ese. (Mo has some words that she’s made up, that she substitutes for real words. I’ve put the real words in parenthesis for clarity’s sake).

Mo ha (cat) Titty (Jessie) ha (cat) RAWR! Mo’s cat and Aunt Jessie’s cat fight!

Coca (doctor) Mo OW! Mo went to the doctor and got shots and it hurt!

Mo Baby hat gee (green) OW! Mo shared her hat with a one-year-old at the zoo, and then the baby tackle-hugged her and they fell on the green grass and it hurt!

Mo Titty (Jessie) Movie ha (cat). Mo and Aunt Jessie watched cat videos on You Tube.

Baby Daddy Boo! There was a video where a baby scared her Daddy.

Mo Mama wet! Mo and Mama jumped through the sprinkler.

And, yes. Just in case you didn’t catch it the first time, Mo calls Jessie “Titty”. Ha! Ha, ha ha ha ha… It makes me laugh every time I think about it. Jessie, however, doesn’t find it quite so amusing. I’m sure Mo will soon be able to actually say “Jessie” and this will be a distant, fond memory. The kind of memory that’s brought up around the table at family functions, “Ha! Remember how Monica used to call Jessie ‘Titty’. Ha ha ha! [insert group laughter and teen-aged Monica blushing, especially if there’s a boyfriend sitting nearby]”.

The official milestone Mo should be reaching as a freshly-minted two year old is two word utterances. Considering she’s already telling stories, I think she’ll be fine. And some day, she won’t even need a translator.

The Stats

Mo-bug and Lu had pediatrician appointments this morning, and we have all the new stats on our beautiful daughters.

Listed in measurements and percentiles when appropriate:

Lu: Height- 22″, 100th%
Weight- 10lbs 4oz, 98th%
Head Circumference- 100th%

Mo: Height-3′, 91st%
Weight- 28lbs, 64th%
Head Circumference- 99th%

I feel like my kids are winning some sort of race, and I know that’s utterly ridiculous, but I still feel that way… Does that make me a horrible person?

Just in case you haven’t seen the theme here, our kiddos are huge. Particularly their heads. No big surprise there. Andy and I both have to buy large hats…

At this point, ouch is all I can think, but I’m sure that memory will fade with time. It did with Mo.

Lu is growing great! She’s already surpassed her birth weight and added a 1/2 inch to her length (I’m not quite sure when that changes into height… Maybe when she spends more time vertical than horizontal?). We haven’t quite figured out her sleeping routine yet, and she spends most of her awake time eating. Thus the weight gain! However, we do see a little more of her personality emerge every day. She has a quick temper that’s balanced by her propensity to snuggle. Her Daddy can calm her down better than anyone. And her eyes are slowly starting to lighten.

We can’t wait to discover more of her.

The way Mo’s growing, she certainly won’t be able to do this much longer:

Yes, she still likes to hide in small spaces and yell “Mamma!” till I find her.

All of a sudden all her pants look like she’s waiting for the flood and the shoes she wore a month ago don’t fit anymore. I swear this all happened overnight.

She’s growing up so fast…

Before we know it, I’ll have to add a third straw for our Lucy-Lu.

That’s it from Casa Elder. Hope you’re having a beautiful day! Mmm milkshake. Doesn’t that sound good? I think I’ll go get one. We have to keep this breastfeeding Mama well-fed right? Right?

Hey! Don’t judge! I’m going to milk that excuse for as long as I can…

Pun intended.

Ha, ha, ha ha!

Ha…

I think I need more sleep…

Experiment Update

The chrysalis is empty.

The moth?

We don’t really know…

Oops

We’ve been a little busy ’round here.

I think I’ll cut us a little slack. Besides, what’s they key to good science? Repeatable results!

My research assistant and I are off to find another cocoon or two.

Maybe this time I should use something other than my library card to cover the top though, huh?

Quick Update

It’s been almost exactly a week since my water broke and the phone tree started ringing.

“She’s on her way to the hospital!”

I immediately felt the peace and love of dozens of praying people. With each text message and message passed on by Mom, I felt even more supported and uplifted.

10ish hours later, little Lu entered the world. And boy, she is a little individual.

She has no trouble letting you know exactly what she needs, and that she needs it now (read: she’s got a good pair of lungs!).  And she eats, and eats, and eats. Apparently that’s what a baby needs when she’s born at almost 10 lbs!

Those are about all the words I have time for right now. It’s hard to believe she’s been on the outside for almost a week…

I know what you really want is to see pictures anyway. So, here they are:

The beautiful roses my sister Jessie bought for our homecoming (complete with hand-painted signs outside that said things like “Welcome Lucia Jean” and “At Last!”).

The garden exploded during the two sunny days we were at the hospital. Mmm mmm mmm, gotta love the sun. I think we may have been a little too ambitious with the tomatoes…

Speaking of sunshine, Mo decided to get into her pool (Thanks Abbie and Joel!) with her clothes on yesterday.

It looked so good to me, I just had to stick my toes in too. Oh! And here’s that pretty pedicure I was talking about in this post. Sorry to say, the soothing aquamarine toes were not the relaxation method during labor I thought they would be. Dang it.

And last, but not least, baby toes. Andy’s favorite. And he’s my favorite. So, this photo is full of favorites!

Happy Independence Day! Blast from the Past

We truly live in the best country in the world.

That is all.

AND a couple pics from 4ths gone by:

2005: Party at the Alzheimer’s, and their super cute kitten!

2007: What could be more patriotic and romantic than creating your own little biosphere? Especially on your first married 4th? And by patriotic I mean nerdy…

2009: A wonderful 4th spent visiting Andy’s Grandparents! Love those guys!!

2010: Mo’s first 4th. Celebrated in style with sparklers and a long shutter speed

2011: Mo’s 2nd 4th (does that make sense?). Spent at the pool visiting Grandma and Grandpa Labrie and all the DeGenova cousins. What a blast!

#2 is still inside. We still have time for an Independence Day baby…but she needs to get things moving soon…
